Ebony Dedicates September Issue To Travyon Martin With Help Of Famous Black Fathers And Sons
While many magazines are dedicating their epic summer issues to all things fashion, EBONY has decided to do a noble thing and step out of the box by dedicating their issue to Trayvon Martin. They’re doing this by featuring famous fathers and sons on three different covers in hoodies, including Dwyane Wade and his sons Zaire and Zion, Spike Lee and his son Jackson, and Boris Kodjoe with his son Nicolas. They also have a special fourth cover for subscribers with Sybrina Fulton, Tracy Martin, and Sybrina’s son Jahvaris Fulton. The covers tie in to the overall theme, and the stories in the new issue will include everything from an interview with Tracy Martin, a profile of the Dream Defenders, information to help you understand “Trayvon’s Law,” which the Dream Defenders are fighting to get passed, a reflection from 17-year-old men on how they feel to be black in America, a poem for Travyon by Jill Scott, and a whole lot more.
Here’s a statement Editor-in-Chief Amy Barnett put out regarding their new issue:
“As a mother of a young Black boy, the tragedy of Travyon Martin affected me deeply. We simply cannot allow the conversations on this issue to come to a standstill. As the leading source for an authoritative perspective on the African-American community, at EBONY we are committed to serving as a hub for Black America to explore solutions, and to giving readers the information and tools they need to help ensure a bright future for all of our children.”
Kudos to EBONY for taking a stand and creating a serious conversation on everything from “Stand Your Ground” laws to the topic of gun violence and more with their September issue. We’ll definitely have to pick this one up and support, and it drops today!

Oprah Winfrey Won’t Allow Friends to Use N-Word: ‘I Feel Strongly About It.’
Don’t use the N-word around Oprah! She will banish you from the country. Okay maybe not, but she might disown you as a friend. In an article in Parade magazine, Oprah Winfrey explained why she hated hearing the N-word used around her in every day conversations. As a star in the upcoming movie “The Butler,” she also explained why she felt the need to school her own director, Lee Daniels on his word choice. Daniel said he used the N-word on a regular basis until the 59-year-old television host sat him down and talked about its power.
In Parade magazine (which hits shelves Aug. 4th), she also acknowledged the fact those close to her, can not use the word:
You cannot be my friend and use that word around me. It shows my age, but I feel strongly about it. I always think of the millions of people who heard that as their last word as they were hanging from a tree.
She continued:
Do we live in a land where Martin Luther King’s dream has been ultimately fulfilled? No. Has part of the dream been fulfilled? Are more people judged by the content of their character than by the color of their skin? Yes. Is everybody judged by the content of their character? Absolutely not.
Oprah may have a problem with certain words from the past, but that hasn’t stopped her political influence. The TV-mogul is endorsing Newark, New Jersey mayor Cory Booker. The democratic representative is running for a spot in the United States Senate, and Oprah is spreading the word by holding a fundraiser for him. Oprah and the New Jersey mayor have been good friends for a while. Oprah even went so far as to dub him a “rock star mayor” on her show. Along with Oprah’s support, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg announced a $100 million gift to Newark schools. Booker is now in the lead to replace the late Democratic Sen. Frank Lautenberg.

Beanie Sigel Post Prison Pictures
Well look who sent some Polaroids from The Penetientiary none other than Philly’s own Beanie Siegl.
The former Roc-A-Fella rapper Beanie Sigel who was also close with Jay-Z, but the two fell out in recent year. Beanie took a couple of pictures while he’s doing time in prison for tax evasion and drug processions.
I guess we should be happy for these? Beans get out and become productive in society again!
The Stars Shine At FOX All-Star Party
It’s always fun to gather a bunch of celebrities together for a snazzy soiree, and at the FOX All-Star Party was the place to be.
“New Girl” stars Zooey Deschanel, Jake Johnson, Max Greenfield, and Lamorne Morris all came out for the affair, having a blast as they posed for photos.
Also in the house were gorgeous gals like Demi Lovato, Diane Kruger, Emily Deschanel, Hannah Simone, and Brenda Song, making the most of the Thursday night festivities.
Mindy Kaling and Minka Kelly both looked fabulous, as did Vanessa Minnillo Lachey, and Zachary Quinto.
Kelly Rowland is the newest "X Factor USA" judge. So she posed it up at SoHo Hose in L.A. with fellow judges Paulina Rubio and Demi Lovato for the Fox TCA Summer Tour conference.
The "Kisses Down Low" singer kept it sexy in a turquoise & white geometric striped dress with her black Louboutin pumps. Loves this summery look on her.
And her new promo pic for "X Factor" is also out. Chick is WINNING with her flawlessness these days.
The third season of "The X Factor" U.S. will have a two-part premiere on Fox on Sept. 11 (1 hour) and Sept. 12 (2 hours) at 8 p.m. EDT/PDT on both dates.
Also at Fox's TCA conference, up and coming actress Nicole Beharie posed with her co-stars Tom Mison, Orlando Jones, and Katie Winter for their upcoming Sci-Fi show "Sleepy Hollow".
She kept it simple yet cute in a black pencil dress with a leather fitted peplum belt.
Nicole plays the lead role in the thriller as Detective Abbie Mills as the show premieres Monday, September 16th.

The dual drop is inspired by the Chicago Bulls' legendary playoff series with Charles Barkley's Phoenix Suns and Gary Payton's Seattle Supersonics take over the classic silhouette.
Both sneakers don premium leather and integrate the colorways of the aforementioned teams' jerseys.
These kicks are a bit much for me, but they could be a solid purchase for die-hard fans of the Air Jordan 1 or people that simply want to relive a piece of the 90s.

That is what exactly went down for the release of Alexander Wang’s fall 2013 collection. The designer took and experimental approach to showcase the release of his latest collection.
Wang set up and unexpected scene with a ‘one time only undisclosed event or open call which he only revealed a time and location. In the days leading up to this open call, Wang gave updates via Twitter and Instagram. On the scene of the event, Wang projected a video message disclosing that attendees will have access to pieces from the T by Alexander Wang collection…for free. The only catch, no shopping bags or shopping carts.

Jay Z is making it rain! Fresh off the release of his 12th solo album. Magna Carta…Holy Grail, the music and business mogul has been showing his gratitude with lots of zeros. “Earlier this year he handed out $50,000 bonuses to everyone in his company, which includes assistants and very low-level people,” a Jay Z employee tells Star. “He even promised another bonus for Christmas.”
“He’s extremely generous – most celebrities are supercheap when it comes to running their businesses,” says the insider. “He knows if his employees are happy, it will benefit him in the long run. His only demand was for everyone to have fun with the money.”

Queen Latifah Says She Has No Interest In Being The Next Oprah
Queen Latifah (real name Dana Owens) is gearing up to take over daytime talk TV. This fall, the 43-year-old is set to premiere ‘The Queen Latifah Show’, airing on CBS, in September. With backings by Jada Pinkett Smith (who is the Executive Producer of the show), viewers already have a high expectation of what she’ll be bringing to the table. Recently, she and Jada held a media session, previewing the show. While chatting with the audience she made clear that she’s not trying to feel Oprah Winfrey’s footsteps:
People have often asked me do I want to be the next Oprah. There is no such thing. Oprah is Oprah. And she’s still being Oprah if anyone hadn’t noticed. Obviously there are great things she accomplished and I would love to be able to accomplish some of those things. But what I bring to television is me. I’m Queen Latifah. I had a different life story and different path that I’ve traveled.
Jada also chimed in, explaining that Latifah will give TV what’s it missing:
She’s very funny, she’s very witty, she’s very intelligent and she has a lot of heart, I think what we’re missing [in daytime] today is heart. So Latifah, to me, when we did the research on her – across the board from [age] 3 to 80, people love her; women, men, kids.
As is traditional, Latifah will be getting some help from her celebrity friends with appearances.Alicia Keys has participated in early tests runs of the show and ‘The Butler‘s’ Lenny Kravitz designed the set. She has also extended invitations to President Barack and First Lady Michelle Obama. The show premieres on September 16.

The site, founded by Angela and Fashion Director Alisha Crutchfield, is a lifestyle brand and website that promotes fashion, beauty, wellness, and empowerment. Guests in attendance were able to shop, sip, and mingle, while listening to music by Hannah Bronfman. City of Chicago Honors ICON Chaka Khan with Street Naming
Ten-time Grammy Award winner Chaka Khan was honored with street naming in the city where her story started, Chicago.
The music icon, who was honored for her stellar 40-year career in music and entertainment, participated in the ceremonial unveiling of Chaka Khan Way on S. Blackstone Avenue, between 50th and 51st Streets, with her family, including her mother Sandra Coleman, her sister, Tammy McCrary, and a host of other relatives in the Chicago area.
Chaka Khan Way is located on the west side of Kenwood Academy, where Chaka attended high school during its early days of operation. The students of Kenwood Academy also had the opportunity to participate in the event.

“This is the biggest honor I have ever received in my life,” says Chaka. “The people of Chicago have always loved me and have supported me throughout my career—through thick and thin. To have a street named after you in the third largest city in the country is a big deal. To think that people will say ‘make a right or left turn on Chaka Khan Way’ is mind blowing. Long after I’m gone, and my children and grandchildren are gone, the street named Chaka Khan Way will still be here to carry on my legacy in the city where it all started for me.
I never would have imagined that I would have been granted this honor. I thank all the city officials responsible for making this happening—and I especially thank Carl McKenzie, who vigorously campaigned and almost single-handedly made this event a reality. My family and I thank God for this blessing.”
